INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT:

Shea Butter

👩🌾 Production process:
To get this gorgeous creamy butter is lengthy and laborious work. The counties these trees grow in are sub-Saharan African countries (as someone who struggles with the high temps of an Irish summer, I am in awe of these farmers). The shea fruit is first hand-picked from the ground, its pulp is removed, and the remaining shea nuts are either boiled or roasted. The nut is then dehusked, leaving the kernel that is then ground into a paste, to which water is added and mixed vigorously to extract the fat. 💪

⚖️ Ethical Sourcing:
We source our shea butter from Ghana, from a beloved supplier who’s primary focus is on ethical practices. Our supplier works with the local women producing this beautiful ingredient and established a long standing co-op for these farmers to safeguard, support and empower them. This is ethical trade at its finest 👌 and we wish it was as easy for every ingredient on the market.

benefits of Shea Butter

🧴 Skin Benefits:
Shea butter is an excellent emollient helping to soften and nourish the skin. It’s anti-inflammatory properties make it a dear friend to dry, damaged and inflamed skin. Contrary to what you may think given its rich oily texture, shea actually helps to balance sebum levels, preventing excessive build up of oil. The fatty acids present in shea help to protect the skin barrier function and increase moisture retention.

💚 Sustainability Suss:
Shea trees make up a high percentage of the biomass in the wooded parklands where it grows, protecting the area against environmental pervasive degradation. It contains sizeable carbon stores with potential for future sequestration of climate change mitigation. No fertilisers or pesticides are used to grow the trees, they grow wild and abundantly.

Shea was one of the first natural ingredients I ever formulated with and I have only grown to love it more. You can find it in our body butters, salves, lip balms and lotions…basically anywhere I can squeeze it in I will!
